National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ~ September 30, 2025

The Village of Donalda is truly excited to embark on the essential journey of truth and reconciliation! We proudly acknowledge that we live, work, and come together on Treaty 6 lands, a region that holds deep historical and cultural significance for Indigenous communities.

Truth and reconciliation in Canada arises from a heartfelt commitment to addressing the difficult legacy of residential schools, which sought to assimilate Indigenous children and diminish their rich cultures. The formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) marked a pivotal moment in our history, as it aimed to document those experiences, honor the resilience of survivors, and provide us with a pathway to healing together.

An important moment in this journey is marked by Orange Shirt Day, celebrated every year on September 30 to honor the experiences of Indigenous children who were taken from their families and placed in residential schools in Canada. The day serves as a reminder of the lasting impacts of these schools on Indigenous communities and aims to promote awareness about the history and legacy of residential schools.

The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture and identity experienced by these children. The story behind it comes from Phyllis Webstad, whose grandmother gave her an orange shirt to wear on her first day of school at a residential institution. When she arrived, the shirt was taken away from her, which became a symbol of the broader loss suffered by many Indigenous children.

Orange Shirt Day encourages people to engage in discussions about reconciliation, support Indigenous rights, and acknowledge the importance of recognizing the past. It serves as a call to action for individuals and communities to foster understanding and respect towards Indigenous peoples.

As a community united in spirit, we are committed to fostering understanding and respect for the rights, traditions, and histories of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. Through education, open dialogue, and collaboration, we aim to build strong, respectful relationships that honor the past and pave the way toward a bright and inclusive future.

Inspired by the TRC’s Calls to Action, we encourage all residents to engage in meaningful conversations and initiatives that promote mutual respect and understanding among everyone in our community. Together, let’s create a vibrant environment where every voice is celebrated and cherished!
